BHUVANESWARI NAVAVARANAM by PUDUKKOTTAI ADHISTHANAM (Sahithyam: V.Ramayya)

This set of Navavarana krithis was written by Sri. V.Ramayya; these are on the Matha Sree Bhuvaneswari Amman Temple, (Uthira Navasalapuri, Puthukkottai) Andal Nagar, West Velachery, Chennai. The presiding Deity of this temple is Sri Bhuvaneswari Amman. The Temple is facing south and with an entrance arch. Amman is in the sitting posture. In the upper hands she has Mazhu and Pasam. Lower hands are in Abhaya and Vara Hastham. Mahameru is in front with Urchavar. Varaahi and Rajamathangi area at the entrance of the sannidhi, in addition to Vinayagar and Subramanyar. In koshtam, Panchamukha Anjaneyar, Durga and Ayyappan. In the prakaram sannidhi for Vinayakar, Sri Shanthananda Swamikal, Dathreyar foot prints, Nava Grahas, Shiva Lingam with Nandi under Vilwa tree. The temple was constructed in 1982 AD and maintained by Sri Bhuvaneswari Bhaktha Mandali. Sri Shanthananda Swamikal was the instrumental in establishing the Bhuvaneswari Peetam of Pudukkottai.

All important Festivals, especially Navarathri, are celebrated here. There are three idols of Sadashiva Bruhmendra Saraswathi Swamikal, Sri Swayamprakasha Bruhmendra Saraswathi Swamikal and Sri Santhananda Bruhmendra Saraswathi Swamikal on the main gopuram.


There are 11 krithis in the Navavaranam set of krithis; these were set to the different ragas by Smt. Rajam Nagarajan, as :

3. Bhuvaneswari paadukaam avalambe - Kambhoji

4. Bhuvaneswarya nikhila jananya - Begaḍa

6. Bhuvaneswaryaḥ gagana sareerayaḥ - Kalyaṇi

7. Bhuvaneswaryaḥ bhuvanapraaṇaayaaḥ - Thoḍi

8. Bhuvaneswaryam bhuvanadeepikayam - Mohanam

9. Bhuvaneswari apaamroopiṇi - Anandabhairavi

10. Bhuvaneswari bhoopuranilayini - Vasantha

11. Maṅgaḻam - Jayathu jayathu Bhuvaneswari - ragamaḻika (aṭhaṇa, bilahari, sahana, madhyamavathi)


Sri Trichy Ganeshan and vid. Nalini Ramprasad also has sung the above compositions, with an Introduction and a Poorvanga song (totally 13); but in different ragas; which is more popular. These have been composed by Sri. L.Krishnan.

This set is named ‘Bhuvaneswari Navavaranam’, but none of the compositions 04 to 12 (supposed to pertain to each of the Navavaranams) give any reference to any particular Avaranam; except 09 and 10, where the word ‘avaranam’ is used. Also, ‘Bhuvaneswari bhoopuranilayini’ refers to the first Avaranam (Trailokya mohana chakram). All the above compositions refer to ‘Navasalpureswari’, confirming that this set is on the Pudukkottai temple.
